  • Notes
    • His 1769 Oving baptism names his parents as “John & Mary Clark”, and the Bishop’s Transcript, copied by the same vicar, repeats it. He is linked to Thomas and Mary Clarke because every other Clarke baptism at Oving from 1763 to 1772 names them (Hannah 1763, Thomas 1764, Mary 1766, Sal 1772), and no John and Mary Clark couple appears at Oving or among West Sussex marriages of 1760–69. The vicar confused this family’s father’s name at least once: William was baptised 20 Dec 1767 as son of “Wm & Mary Clarke” but buried 1 Nov 1769 as son of “Thos & Mary Clarke”. The 1769 register also has two entries the vicar marked “misplaced”.
