    • Identification: the register calls both bride and groom “of this Parish” (West Tilbury). This is taken to be the marriage of William and Sarah Grubb of Orsett, the neighbouring parish, where their first child, William, was baptised on 27 Feb 1792, 11½ months later. No other William Grubb marrying a Sarah is indexed in south Essex at the time; the Widford couple of 1784 (Sarah Saunders) were still at Widford in 1788. Sarah made her mark. One witness, Stephen Boston, married Sarah Hardy, widow, at West Tilbury a fortnight earlier (20 Feb 1791) as a widower; he is probably the bride’s father.
